A lion is a huge cat with a muscular build, a thick mane, rounded ears, and a furry peat on the tip of the tail.

Lions are most active at night and live in various habitats but typically prefer grasslands, savannas, dense scrubland, and open forests.

Because of the lion’s majestic features and impeccable hunting skills, the lion is a powerful animal indeed. The attraction of lions has created a huge demand for a free lion drawing tutorial.

You asked for it, so we delivered. We have now created a step-by-step guide on how to draw a lion made easier with 9 easy steps coupled with simple illustrations.

So what are you waiting for? Go ahead, grab a piece of paper and a pencil. Let’s draw together!

How to Draw A Lion

Step 1

Start by drawing a sideways oval shape in the middle of the paper. This creates a rough sketch of the shape of the lion’s head.

When outlining, remember to draw with a soft grip and light strokes. Avoid pressing down too hard with the pencil so that you can erase any overlapping lines later.

To ensure the lion is drawn in the centre, you can create reference lines by drawing an intersecting horizontal and vertical line on the paper.

Where the two lines meet, mark where you should draw the oval shape.

Step 2

Draw the lion’s mane around the side oval shape we drew in the previous step.

Remember to add wisps of hair to add texture and make the mane soft and furry as it should be!

After completing the step, the outline of the lion’s head should be visible along with its mane.

Step 3

Just below the lion’s head, draw two paws side by side with three paws showing below.

To create the legs, the leg can be textured by drawing two parallel vertical lines with three curves next to each other.

Repeat the same step on the opposite side to create the right leg. At this point, both of the lion’s front legs should be complete.

Step 4

Draw an angled curve on each side of the lion’s lower body to form the back legs. Next, draw a half circle with another curved line side by side at the bottom of each leg.

This forms the lion’s feet, thus completing his hind legs.

Because the lion faces up, both hind legs are only partially visible.

Step 5

Draw several connected curvy pointed shapes enclosing the top of the lion’s head. This forms the lion’s thick and long mane.

Be sure to erase the outline that overlaps in the lion’s mane! This helps keep your drawing neat.

Step 6

In the lion’s mane, draw an inverted U-shaped figure on each side at the top of the head.

After that, close the figure by drawing a line across the floor. This creates the lion’s left and right ears.

Lion ears are usually rounded and straight, so keep that in mind when drawing lion ears.

Step 7

Draw a thin, elongated line starting from the lower right side of the lion’s body. This forms the lion’s tail.

Next, draw a patch of thick fur on the tip of the tail—it’s one of the lion’s distinctive physical features!

Step 8

Draw a sideways oval shape on the underside of the lion’s face. This will outline the lion’s face, where we will then draw his nose and mouth.

Draw an inverted triangle for the nose. Then, just below the nose, draw a short vertical line with an upward curve on each side to create the lion’s mouth.

Add details to the lion’s ears by simply drawing an inner figure following the outline of each ear. This creates the appearance of inner ears.

Step 9

Complete your lion drawing by adding a pair of eyes! Draw two oval shapes that will stand above the lion’s face. Next, draw a small circular shape in each eye.

Next, shade all of the eyes except for the small circle. This creates a dramatic “wink” effect that makes the lion even more adorable!

As you can see in the figure, the lion has finally reunited. Now it’s just a touch of colour away from bringing the lion to life!

Grab your favourite art supplies because it’s time for the fun part: colouring your drawing!

The colour of a lion’s fur is primarily yellow-gold, while the colour of its mane ranges from blonde to auburn to black.
